Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
The Watts Tutorial Program serves the educational and social needs of elementary to high school aged children residing in Watts. Every Wednesday the students are bused from Watts to UCLA, where the students engage in one-on-one tutoring. The students arrive at UCLA at 5:30pm and leave at 7:30pm. An employee of each of the sites always accompanies them on the trip to UCLA and back. The program is divided into four parts: reading, homework, dinner and activity. The first 15 minutes are devoted to reading out loud to their tutor from books. The next 45 minutes are dedicated to academic work where tutors assist students in the homework they bring, test preparation, or reviewing other material. Tutors focus on the core academic subjects including math, English, history, and science when working with their student. Students then take a 15-20 minute dinner break, as their entire trip to UCLA and home is about five hours during dinnertime. Finally, the last 40 minutes are dedicated to games and activities. The activities are designed to educate the children on a variety of topics such as promoting college preparation, teamwork, confidence and leadership. Each week a different tutor volunteers to run the week's activity. They prepare lessons that go beyond the children's normal curriculum and allow the children to use their creativity and express themselves freely. For example, this past year a UCLA campus group that promotes college awareness spoke to our children. One of the highlights of this year was watching the children engage in an open discussion about reasons why students from their area do not go to college, the issues that they face in their area, and ways to avoid those problems. We plan to bring in more speakers with similar backgrounds to the children in order to demonstrate the opportunities available to them. Every quarter there are two Saturday field trips that provide the children with an opportunity to bond with their tutor outside of an academic setting. Field trips are chosen for their educational, as well as entertaining value in an effort to enhance the children's emotional growth. Last year some of the places the students experienced were the Travel Museum at Griffith Park and horseback riding. This coming year we plan on visiting the zoo, LACMA, and the La Brea Tar Pits. The program strives to provide the children with the variety of opportunities, in order to provide more awareness about the world around them.
